It is with great sadness that the Lompoc Police Department reports that Police Agent Christopher Paul Kies, 38 years old, died while being treated
for an accidental overdose of prescription medication for a back injury sustained in an on-duty vehicle accident. He was in the critical care unit
at Marian Medical Center.
Agent Kies was born in Visalia, California and raised in the Santa Maria area. He was a graduate of the Allan Hancock College Police Academy and
joined the Lompoc Police Department on 7-23-94, as a Reserve Police Officer. On 7-8-95, he was promoted to the position of police officer and was
assigned to the Operations Division as a patrol officer and a motorcycle officer. Agent Kies was promoted to his current rank on 11-1-03. He was
assigned to the Santa Barbara Regional Narcotics Team as a narcotics investigator.
While working in Lompoc, Agent Kies held a wide variety of assignments. He served as a member of the Special Enforcement Team and as a field training officer. Agent Kies also served as a detective, and as an assistant range master. Agent Kies was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Gulf War. He was honorably discharged in 1991.
Agent Kies received numerous awards and commendations during his time with the Lompoc Police Department. In 1999, he was recognized by the Department as the Officer of the Year and received the prestigious H. Thomas Guerry Award for Valor. He was honored for his life saving efforts in rescuing a suicidal man who had set his house on fire and doused himself with gasoline.
In 2002, Agent Kies received a statewide recognition from MADD for his DUI enforcement efforts. The Lompoc Elks awarded Agent Kies their Award of Valor in 2004, for saving the life of an elderly woman who had been brutally beaten. Agent Christopher Kies is survived by his wife, three daughters and two sons. The men and women of the Lompoc Police Department mourn his loss and extend our deepest sympathies to his family and Friends
