Jacob "Jake" Herweyer
Feb. 11 1991
Jan. 25, 2010
Omaha NE
Jacob Jake Herweyer never lost the fighting spirit that made him an
All-Nebraska football player and a standout wrestler for Millard West High School.
Herweyer, 18, of Omaha died Monday following a one-vehicle rollover
accident on Interstate 80. He was pronounced dead at a Lincoln hospital.
Millard West Principal Greg Tiemann said Tuesday that Herweyer, a 2009
graduate, was one of those kids teachers never forget.
He was really loved by everyone at our school and he will be
remembered for his wonderful spirit and determination, Tiemann said.
It was great any time he walked into our building.
During his senior year, Herweyer helped Millard West to its second
straight Class A football championship. He also placed second at the state
wrestling tournament at 171 pounds while posting a 37-1 record.
Herweyer received an athletic scholarship from Hastings College. In
June, however, he suffered a traumatic head injury as the result of a fall that hospitalized him
for almost two months.
By August, Herweyer had recovered and enrolled at Hastings College.
Elaine Herweyer said her son kept up hope that he could wrestle again and withdrew from school in
November to have an injured shoulder repaired.
He planned to go back (to Hastings) next fall, she said.
Investigators for the Nebraska State Patrol said Herweyer was
westbound in a 2002 Mercury Cougar about 5 p.m. when the tires entered the median about a mile west of the Greenwood interchange.
The car went back onto the road, then into a ditch, where it hit a
tree and ended up on its top.Herweyer was ejected and trapped underneath the car. He was not
wearing a seat belt.
Elaine Herweyer described her son as fearless and fun loving. She said
he loved snowboarding, jet askiing, listening to music and being around children.
The kids were always coming to our door and asking if Jake could come
out and play, she said. He would let the kids crawl all over him and hang on him.
Jake Herweyer is survived by his Parents, sister Jenna and brother Trevor.
